9 January- DCAP Monthly Meeting: Navigating the Financial World of the
Special Needs Family. Our presenter will be Maedi Tanham Carney, CFP of M&L
Special Needs Planning, LLC. The meeting is on Saturday, January 9, 2010
from 11am to 1pm at the Palasides Neighborhood Library, 4901 V Street, NW at
49th Street, NW Washington, DC 20007. This workshop is an overview of the
journey of the special needs family. Specifically we discuss the special
needs financial planning timeline pointing out and explaining the key
pressure points for the special needs child. We discuss how the special
needs family inevitably must plan for two generations. When discussing the
timeline we give definitions to the special needs language at the specific
pressure points.
In addition, we discuss the special needs planning pyramid - traditional
versus special needs planning. Specifically the differences for a special
needs family in the areas of risk management, legal and estate issues, cash
reserves, cash management & budgeting and wealth distribution. The
intention of this workshop is to try and bring simplicity and understanding
to a very complex and overwhelming topic. Please RSVP to
info@dcautismparents.org.

9 January- State Senator R. Edward Houck will be hosting a town hall meeting on January 9, 2010 at the Germanna Community College, Locust Grove Campus, 2130 Germanna Highway, Locust Grove, VA 22508 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. My purpose in hosting this meeting is to begin communication with individuals concerned with public and higher education prior to the General Assembly's work on the Governor's introduced budget, which is expected to close a $3.5 billion shortfall in revenue. With many difficult decisions facing the General Assembly, it is important that I receive your feedback. Specifically, I want to hear from citizens concerning the budget reductions' effects on education in the 17th Senatorial District and the Commonwealth. Clearly, our communication has never been more important. Educators, parents and other interested citizens from Culpeper, Louisa, Madison, Orange, and Spotsylvania counties as well as the City of Fredericksburg are invited to attend. Likewise, Germanna Community College, Piedmont Virginia Community College, and University of Mary Washington representatives are invited to participate as well. The meeting will be open to the public and the media.

Request for Level of Interest in a Muslim holiday Eid event for Children with Disabilities. We need to gauge the level of interest in the event as we do not know for sure how we can find a large enough community of Muslim children with disabilities in the Northern Virginia Region to host this special event. The ideas so far are to have fun activities, modified prayer, and possibly resources for the families. The person who is working on this project has a brother with Autism. Every Eid she gets ideas of things to do to help him celebrate. If you are interested, please kindly reply to razamb@gmail.com and tell her what activities would interest you, where you are located and how many people would participate!
