7 January- Proactive Parents workshop on Special Needs Trusts/Pooled Trusts-
What are they? Why would you need one? How to you set one up? It is by
KELLY THOMPSON, PLC and TIA MARSILI from The Arc of NoVA. Protect Medicaid
benefits by establishing a special needs trust. Income or inheritance beyond
a very small amount will cause ineligibility. Essential care for those with
disabilities is so very expensive that most will rely on some form of public
aid to make ends meet in the future. Be sure to protect those benefits. An
attorney familiar with special needs trusts can help avoid financial
pitfalls. Pooled trusts are also available for those who may have nobody to
act as trustee. Come learn more. It is on Thursday, January 7th from 7 to
9:30pm at the Burke Community Church (Room 31A), 9000 Old Keene Mill Road,
Burke, VA (at NE corner of FFX CTY PKWY and Old Keene Mill Road). RSVP to
Beth Troutman at troutmanbeth@yahoo.com or at 703-346-2414. Walk-ins
welcome, but prefer registration by email. FEE: $10 fee (room rental,
copies, and other admin). Waived if you attended our last seminar on
Financial Planning in November.

8 January- State Budget Hearing on Friday January 8, 2009 from 8:00 to begin
line standing. Hearings start at 10:00am and go until the last speaker. it
is at the Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale Campus (Ernst
Center Theater), 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA 22003.
Directions are at
http://www.nvcc.edu/about-nova/maps-directions/annandale/index.html.
Background: Typically over 200 people of all ages and abilities show up to
advocate for "A Life Like Yours" in some way. For over seven years The Arc
and our partners have been very successful in securing dollars for building
community supports. We have limited our speakers to deliver a powerful
message, with many people standing behind in support. Goal this year:

* THIS YEAR WE WOULD LIKE EVERYONE TO TELL HIS/HER STORY!!!
* THIS YEAR WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE OVER 400 PEOPLE ATTEND AND SPEAK!!!
* THIS YEAR WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO INVITE YOUR LEGISLATOR TO JOIN YOU AS
YOU SHARE YOUR STORY, INVITE THEM TOO

How to Sign UP: Typically, speaker sign-up begins one hour prior to the
hearing itself. In order to be among the first speakers on the list, plan
to arrive early or have someone go to hold the place in the wait line and
sign up the speaker. Speakers are taken in the order of registration. Each
person may register only one speaker at a time. If a person has a physical
disability or a hearing impairment, special arrangements can be made and, to
make them, you may call the HAC phone number at 804.698.1590. Since
comments are limited to 3 minutes per person (and it may be shortened based
on the length of the hearing), we suggest that each speaker prepare for only
2 minutes worth of pointed and succinct comment. This should be practiced
aloud and timed by the speaker in advance to be sure that it is about 2
minutes. We propose that each VAA member and Provider group commit to a one
hour slot during the budget hearing!!! Which is probably closer to 5-10
speakers earlier in the day and 10-20 speakers later in the day after lunch.
Speakers will have 3 minutes each and we would like all of our groups to get
as close to 100 people in the crowd to emphasis the numbers of people and
lives that will be impacted by the proposed budget cuts!!! Even if someone
cannot speak for themselves it is VERY IMPORTANT to be present!

9 January- INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY COMMITTEE OF THE ARLINGTON COUNTY COMMUNITY
SERVICES BOARD PRESENTS A FORUM FOR PARENTS ABOUT WAIVERS on SATURDAY, JANUARY

member will present information about the MENTAL RETARDATION/INTELLECTUAL
DISABILITY WAIVER, ELDERLY AND DISABLED CONSUMER DIRECTED WAIVER, and
INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES WAIVER. There will be a

questions. Elevator access to the 7th floor must be granted by the security
guard on the ground (G) level in the lobby. Free underground garage parking

business days in advance.

9 January- Sensory Friendly Movie. Please join AMC and the Autism Society
for "Alvin and the Chipmunks 2". It is on Saturday, January 9, 2010 from
10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the AMC Tyson's (Mclean) - 703-734-6212, AMC Potomac
Mills (Woodbridge) - 703-490-3801, and AMC Rio Cinemas (Gaithersburg)
301-948-6673. Cost is $6 per person. AMC Entertainment (AMC) and the
Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other
disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy new current in a safe and
accepting environment on a monthly basis with the "Sensory Friendly Films"
program. In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for
this unique audience, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought
up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own
gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be
shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up
and dance, walk, shout or sing - in other words, AMC's "Silence is Golden"
policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is in
question.

9 January- DCAP Monthly Meeting: Navigating the Financial World of the Special
Needs Family. Our presenter will be Maedi Tanham Carney, CFP of M&L Special
Needs Planning, LLC. The meeting is on Saturday, January 9, 2010 from 11am to
1pm at the Palasides Neighborhood Library, 4901 V Street, NW at 49th Street,
NW Washington, DC 20007. This workshop is an overview of the journey of the
special needs family. Specifically we discuss the special needs financial
planning timeline pointing out and explaining the key pressure points for the
special needs child. We discuss how the special needs family inevitably must
plan for two generations. When discussing the timeline we give definitions to
the special needs language at the specific pressure points.
In addition, we discuss the special needs planning pyramid - traditional
versus special needs planning. Specifically the differences for a special
needs family in the areas of risk management, legal and estate issues, cash
reserves, cash management & budgeting and wealth distribution. The intention
of this workshop is to try and bring simplicity and understanding to a very
complex and overwhelming topic. Please RSVP to info@dcautismparents.org.

9 January- Sen. Houck Hosts Education Funding Town Hall Meeting. In the
wake of sagging economic revenues and its negative impact on public and
higher education funding, I am hosting a town hall meeting on Saturday,
January 9, 2010 at the Germanna Community College (Locust Grove Campus),
2130 Germanna Hwy, Locust Grove, VA 22508 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
My purpose in hosting this meeting is to begin communication with
individuals concerned with public and higher education prior to the General
Assembly's work on the Governor's introduced budget, which is expected to
close a $3.5 billion shortfall in revenue. With many difficult decisions
facing the General Assembly, it is important that I receive your feedback.
Specifically, I want to hear from citizens concerning the budget reductions'
effects on education in the 17th Senatorial District and the Commonwealth.
Clearly, our communication has never been more important. Educators,
parents and other interested citizens from Culpeper, Louisa, Madison,
Orange, and Spotsylvania counties as well as the City of Fredericksburg are
invited to attend. Likewise, Germanna Community College, Piedmont Virginia
Community College, and University of Mary Washington representatives are
invited to participate as well. The meeting will be open to the public and
the media.

10 January- ASNV Baltimore Aquarium Trip announced by Kymberly DeLoatche,
Executive Director of the Autism Society of Northern Virginia. I am happy to
announce that ASNV is offering another afternoon of underwater adventure at
the Baltimore Aquarium. We have a limited number of free tickets for Sunday,
January 10 from 3:30pm to 7pm, that will be distributed on a first-come,

purchased at the regular price upon your arrival or in advance at
www.aqua.org. Our tickets include admission on Sunday January 10 at 3:00pm
and open access to the entire facility including the cafeteria and gift shop.
It also includes the dolphin show at 3:30pm and access to a quiet room for the
entire stay. The facility closes at 7pm. We have arranged this opportunity
in partnership with the Aquarium in order to increase the enjoyment of all our
family members as the crowds tend to be low during this time and on a Sunday.
Please plan to arrive at the Aquarium by 2:30pm in order to receive your
tickets. Directions and parking information can be found at www.aqua.org.
Stroller and other information will be sent to families reserving tickets. If
you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me.
