Why would you need one? How to you set one up? It is by KELLY THOMPSON, PLC and TIA MARSILI from The Arc of NoVA. Protect Medicaid benefits by establishing a special needs trust. Income or inheritance beyond a very small amount will cause ineligibility. Essential care for those with disabilities is so very expensive that most will rely on some form of public aid to make ends meet in the future. Be sure to protect those benefits. An attorney familiar with special needs trusts can help avoid financial pitfalls. Pooled trusts are also available for those who may have nobody to act as trustee. Come learn more. It is on Thursday, January 7th from 7 to 9:30pm at the Burke Community Church (Room 31A), 9000 Old Keene Mill Road, Burke, VA (at NE corner of FFX CTY PKWY and Old Keene Mill Road). RSVP to Beth Troutman at troutmanbeth@yahoo.com or at 703-346-2414. Walk-ins welcome, but prefer registration by email. FEE: $10 fee (room rental, copies, and other admin). Waived if you attended our last seminar on Financial Planning in November. 8 January- State Budget Hearing on Friday January 8, 2009 from 8:00 to begin line standing. Hearings start at 10:00am and go until the last speaker. it is at the Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale Campus (Ernst Center Theater), 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA 22003. Directions are at http://www.nvcc.edu/about-nova/maps-directions/annandale/index.html. Background: Typically over 200 people of all ages and abilities show up to advocate for "A Life Like Yours" in some way. For over seven years The Arc and our partners have been very successful in securing dollars for building community supports. We have limited our speakers to deliver a powerful message, with many people standing behind in support. Goal this year: * THIS YEAR WE WOULD LIKE EVERYONE TO TELL HIS/HER STORY!!! * THIS YEAR WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE OVER 400 PEOPLE ATTEND AND SPEAK!!! * THIS YEAR WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO INVITE YOUR LEGISLATOR TO JOIN YOU AS YOU SHARE YOUR STORY, INVITE THEM TOO How to Sign UP: Typically, speaker sign-up begins one hour prior to the hearing itself. In order to be among the first speakers on the list, plan to arrive early or have someone go to hold the place in the wait line and sign up the speaker. Speakers are taken in the order of registration. Each person may register only one speaker at a time. If a person has a physical disability or a hearing impairment, special arrangements can be made and, to make them, you may call the HAC phone number at 804.698.1590. Since comments are limited to 3 minutes per person (and it may be shortened based on the length of the hearing), we suggest that each speaker prepare for only 2 minutes worth of pointed and succinct comment. This should be practiced aloud and timed by the speaker in advance to be sure that it is about 2 minutes. We propose that each VAA member and Provider group commit to a one hour slot during the budget hearing!!! Which is probably closer to 5-10 speakers earlier in the day and 10-20 speakers later in the day after lunch. Speakers will have 3 minutes each and we would like all of our groups to get as close to 100 people in the crowd to emphasis the numbers of people and lives that will be impacted by the proposed budget cuts!!! Even if someone cannot speak for themselves it is VERY IMPORTANT to be present! 9 January- Sensory Friendly Movie. Please join AMC and the Autism Society for "Alvin and the Chipmunks 2". It is on Saturday, January 9, 2010 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the AMC Tyson's (Mclean) - 703-734-6212, AMC Potomac Mills (Woodbridge) - 703-490-3801, and AMC Rio Cinemas (Gaithersburg) 301-948-6673. Cost is $6 per person. AMC Entertainment (AMC) and the Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy new current in a safe and accepting environment on a monthly basis with the "Sensory Friendly Films" program. In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for this unique audience, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing - in other words, AMC's "Silence is Golden" policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is in question. 9 January- Sen. Houck Hosts Education Funding Town Hall Meeting. In the wake of sagging economic revenues and its negative impact on public and higher education funding, I am hosting a town hall meeting on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the Germanna Community College (Locust Grove Campus), 2130 Germanna Hwy, Locust Grove, VA 22508 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. My purpose in hosting this meeting is to begin communication with individuals concerned with public and higher education prior to the General Assembly's work on the Governor's introduced budget, which is expected to close a $3.5 billion shortfall in revenue. With many difficult decisions facing the General Assembly, it is important that I receive your feedback. Specifically, I want to hear from citizens concerning the budget reductions' effects on education in the 17th Senatorial District and the Commonwealth. Clearly, our communication has never been more important. Educators, parents and other interested citizens from Culpeper, Louisa, Madison, Orange, and Spotsylvania counties as well as the City of Fredericksburg are invited to attend. Likewise, Germanna Community College, Piedmont Virginia Community College, and University of Mary Washington representatives are invited to participate as well. The meeting will be open to the public and the media. 16 January- POAC-NoVA Information and Support Group Meeting. Topic is "How to get the most out of your child's school program".
