| PVBIA Book Clubs for Kids on the Spectrum
Here is our second session of the Book Clubs. We have some spaces opening up in both book clubs. - Six 1-hour sessions - Twice a month - Location to be announced in Fairfax - Cost of $72 per child **NOT INCLUDING THE BOOKS**. Please pay online at http://www.poac-nova.org/pay/. We will have two of our great POAC-NoVA Verbal Behavior Instructors Academy (PVBIA) mentors sharing 10 kids per group. We will also use neuro-typical peers to model and give input. Ratio will be no more than 6 kids to 1 teacher. This program is for children who are high-functioning with lots of spontaneous language or Asperger's Syndrome. NOTE: Neuro-Typical models have been selected already and we do not need any additional peers at this time. Required criteria to join this group: - Children age 4 to 12 on the autism spectrum only! - Higher-functioning/Asperger's Syndrome end of the spectrum - No aggressive, self-injurious or disruptive behaviors (some self-stimulatory behavior is more than understood) - Child must be able to separate from the parent. Parents are not permitted to stay. Please consider this before signing up. - No aides or shadows in this class to limit distractions and additional people in the room. If your child is in this group they should not need an aide or shadow to work and learn for 1 hour. Please also consider this before signing up. - Children 8 to 12 years of age MUST be able to read with some fluency and comprehension. o Children 8 to 12 years of age will be reading the books out of the class and you will need to buy the books in advance. o Children 8 to 12 years of age will read 3 books in 6 sessions so please budget $12 to $22 per book. - Children 4 to 7 years of age will be read the book during class. However, we still suggest, but do not require that you buy the book to read with your child prior to class. - Your child should be able to attend ALL of the classes listed below. We are limiting the group to 10 kids and want all of the children to have a consistent group of friends to meet and learn with in this program. - These groups are designed to help kids with High Functioning Autism work on building friendships, deal with bullies and accepting No and working on coping with emotions. - Please ONLY apply for this program if your child can attend in group settings with a 4:1 ratio, read (if they are 8-12), answer novel questions in group settings and attend all of the dates below as part of this group is creating friendships between the kids in the group. Dates: Saturday's on 1/16, 1/30, 2/6, 2/20, 3/6, 3/20 *** snow dates will be made up. Cost: 72$ per child **not including the cost of the books** You will purchase your own books. Details on the 8-12 Year Old Club: 5:30pm-6:30pm
Our 8 to 12 year old kids will be learning about expectations of friendships and why they are important and about how feelings play into the way we act and respond to one another. Kids will pre-read the books (book information will be given to families in the program) and they discuss these books over 2 sessions. Our goals with this program are 1) create children who are more aware of relationships and there value 2) create friendships with kids in the class 3) give our kids another reason to love reading and experience a book club environment. 8-12y.o 5:30-6:30PM Details Details on the 8-12 Year Old Club: 5:30pm-6:30pmOur 8 to 12 year old kids will be learning about expectations of friendships and why they are important and about how feelings play into the way we act and respond to one another. Instructors will read the book to the children and then the group will discuss how it pertains to them and how they can apply this information on a child's level. Our goal with this program is that children 1) learn about how to create friendship and understand emotions and 2) actually create a few friendships from this class 3) give our kids another reason to love books and experience a book club environment.
